Fundamental Research and Applied Science

In cooperation with the leading scientific and educational centres of Europe and North America, EthnoExpert implements research projects in the field of Arctic studies, environmental management and sustainability in relation to industrial development and ICT innovations.

  • Integrated ecosystem management (IEM) approach to conserve biodiversity and minimise habitat fragmentation in three selected model areas in the Russian Arctic. 2008-2009.
  • Research under the state contract, "Topography and Structure of the Ancestral Lands of the Aboriginal Population of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District". 2010.
  • Research under the UNDP/GEF project, "Conservation and Sustainable Use of Biodiversity in the Territory of the Taymyr Peninsula, Russia: Maintaining Relationships of Landscapes". 2011-2012.

    In 2013, EthnoExpert was selected to perform the research works on the “Demonstration of a Tripartite Agreement / Dialogue between the Indigenous Population, public authorities and energy companies” for the needs of the project “Mainstreaming Biodiversity Conservation into Russia’s Energy Sector policies and operations”, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation.

Construction & Energy

We help companies who work in the construction, mining and oil & gas industries to build effective policies in the area of sustainable development, including risk identification and management, environmental and social impact assessment, and long-term sustainability strategies for cooperation with interested parties.

  • Evaluation of the socio-economic situation and a study on local community expectations in the area of the LNG plant construction as part of the integrated development of the Shtokman Gas Condensate field. 2008-2009
  • Socio-economic research in the engineering and environmental surveys within the Nenets Autonomous District for the needs of OJSC "Giprovostokneft". 2009-2010.
  • Preparation of the "Social and Health Impact Assessment" section as part of the development of ESHIA/ESIA, ed. A-01 for the Shtokman Development AG. 2010, 2011.
  • Traditional land-use and ethno-cultural environment studies in the area of influence of the South-Tambeyskoe Gas Condensate field (Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District) for the needs of Yamal LNG. 2011-2012/2013.
  • Ethnological studies on the background assessment of licensed oil sites in the Nenets Autonomous District and the Komi Republic for the needs of Shell Company. 2012.
  • Ethnological works for the development of the Company's policy of engagement with the Indigenous Community, under environmental engineering research for the gold mine project implementation in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for "Severstal-Gold". 2012.
  • Ethnological research in the Yamalsky, Tazovsky, Nadymsky and Priural′sky districts of YANAO with the aim of developing methodologies of compensation measures and the harmonisation of relations with the Indigenous Peoples in the framework of the future industrial development for the needs of Gazprom. 2013.

Environment & Regional planning

EthnoExpert is a long-term partner for the project aimed to contribute to the restoration and sustainable management of degraded peatlands in order to reduce fire incidents and GHG emissions from drainage in European Russian peatlands. Works are financed under the International Climate Initiative (ICI) by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMU), facilitated through the KfW German Development Bank (Project number 11 III 040 RUS K Restoring Peatlands), and implemented by Wetlands International.

  • Restoring Peatlands in Russia – for fire prevention and climate change mitigation. 2011-2015.

    In order to contribute to global environmental issues and Arctic biodiversity conservation efforts, EthnoExpert performs works in the northern remote regions, promoting sustainability principles for regional planning and policies for natural resource use.

  • Development of expert recommendations for the conservation of migratory bird populations through the improvement of hunting regulations in the Nenets Autonomous Okrug. In partnership with the Wetlands International. The Netherlands. Funded by the Arcadia Fund. UK. 2015.
  • Addressing the illegal shooting of swans in arctic Russia: Pilot Study. In partnership with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. UK. 2015.

ICT & Finance

Our goal is to help our clients identify standards that should be applied in the development and integration of ICT products and services. We introduce measures to improve the environmental performance of ICT, particularly in terms of sustainability within the social surroundings of the project. By focusing on the responsible acquisition, maintenance, use and disposal of ICT services, we aim to utilise ICT resources at the highest efficiency level.

  • GIS on sacrificed objects, natural and cultural heritage sites of the Indigenous Peoples of Taimyr. 2009–2011.
  • Mapping of traditional land-use and cultural objects that has been affected by the Yamal LNG project area. 2013.
  • Sociological and expert studies for the "Regional IT environmental management system of the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous District” project under the Gazprom initiative. 2013.
  • Indigenous Peoples Development Plan: 2014-2018 for the Yamal LNG based on the “Free prior and informed consent” (FPIC) principles in support for the international financing under IFC standards.

    Another focus of the EthnoExpert ICT Sustainability services is our clients’ effective use of ICT to promote more sustainable practices in business operations and management strategies, supporting economic profits for the industry and social benefits for the community.
